Gubi Partners with Beast to Open New Concept Space in Shanghai

As life in Shanghai starts to return to normal after the Covid-19 pandemic shows signs of slowing, Gubi has partnered with Beast to create a new concept space.

Located in a three-storey, 100-year-old mansion in Shanghai’s French Concession, the space is Gubi’s first outside of Denmark.

The culturally significant building evokes a sense of calm, offering a moment of quiet reflection in the heart of the bustling city.

Having undergone a significant five-year renovation, the multi-functional site includes a café, garden, event space and boutique hotel with just two rooms.

The full breadth and depth of the Gubi collection is presented alongside a carefully curated selection of art, design and floristry.

A grand entrance on a quiet tree-lined street leads inside, whilst the first-floor café spills out through a second entrance into a tray-shaped rear courtyard.

Here, taking inspiration from Italian architect Carlo Scarpa, the space uses different levels in order to leave the structure of the old building undisturbed.

Inside, the Gubi design team, in collaboration with Beast and local interior design firm Chaos Programme, has worked carefully within heritage-listing regulations to create a range of stylised settings that demonstrate the versatility of Gubi furniture, lighting and interior objects.

Following local government protocols for health and safety, the concept space is open by appointment only.
